M.A.S.S. (Multi Application Safety System) from Asset International VRS, a leading supplier of temporary safety barriers to the UK highways sector, was chosen by main contractor Costain to Lancashire County Council, to provide increased operational safety to the pedestrians, site workers and traffic during the construction of the 4.8 km Heysham to M6 link. M.A.S.S. was identified as an ideal solution for such a vast project due to fulfilling one of Costain’s key priorities; allowing workers to operate safely, efficiently and responsibly by ensuring they operate in an environment free from harm. Their values ensure everyone at Costain is committed to being safe and environmentally aware, two points that can be attributed to M.A.S.S.

Made of steel M.A.S.S. is durable and long lasting, the base unit has a unique design, incorporating roll-on and roll-off stability, utilising the errant vehicle’s weight to stabilise the barrier during impact. M.A.S.S. can also be compactly stacked so fewer lorry loads are needed when the time comes for relocating.

Construction of this new section of two lane dual carriageway incorporating a footway and cycle way along the entire route will also provide improved access for residents, businesses and tourists to the Heysham and Morecambe area. The highway will open up areas for regeneration whilst reducing traffic congestion currently experienced within the City of Lancaster and improving cycling safety. The need for new roundabouts, underpasses and bridges over the busy A6 along the new route as well as the construction of motorway slip roads, park and ride facilities and passing over the Lancaster canal and west coast railway line require site safety to be at its optimum.

The relative lightweight and favourable shape of M.A.S.S. made the storing, transporting and handling from site to site a secondary consideration when selecting M.A.S.S.

Extremely quick and easy to assemble due to it’s unique plug-in sections; M.A.S.S. steel barrier achieves maximum safety with minimum traffic-flow disruptions during assembly and dismantling. The high visibility base units are free standing and various top sections were added for specific job demands.
